What are students saying about substance use and other important topics? The Illinois Youth Survey may help answer those questions!

The IYS is a statewide student survey about substance use and related issues. It is conducted in schools with grade levels 8, 10, and 12 in the spring of even years. With funding from the Illinois Department of Human Services, the Center for Prevention Research and Development (CPRD) at the University of Illinois coordinates the survey at no charge to schools throughout the state.

What do the IYS questions cover?

In addition to substance use and demographic questions, the survey covers some risk and protective factors for youth drug use and other youth risk behaviors. Because specific kinds of information about a youth’s community, peers, school, and family are statistically associated with the degree of drug use among groups of youth, questions on those topics are also included. In addition, there are questions about violence and a few other problem behaviors.

What answers does the IYS provide?

It provides guidance on questions that parents, school personnel, and community members have, including:

  • How much of a problem do we have?

  • What is the nature of that problem?

  • How can we address the problem?

Students who do not engage in substance use have better attendance, get higher grades and test scores, and are less likely to skip school, drop out, or engage in risky behaviors. The IYS is a key part of a statewide effort to inform local schools and communities about youth attitudes and behaviors regarding substance use, school violence, school climate, and other health and mental health topics. The data obtained through the IYS allows schools, communities, and state administrators to develop strategic plans for promoting healthy behaviors among their youth.
