Every May, communities across the country come together for National Prevention Week (NPW)—an annual observance dedicated to increasing public awareness of, and action around, mental health and substance use prevention. Sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), NPW offers a chance to highlight prevention efforts, share success stories, and promote the importance of well-being at every stage of life.

This year, NPW takes place May 11–17, 2025, and the theme is “A Celebration of Possibility: Prevention Happens Here.”

What Is National Prevention Week?

National Prevention Week is about more than just awareness—it's a call to action. Whether you're a community leader, educator, healthcare provider, or simply a concerned citizen, it's a chance to make a positive impact by supporting youth, reducing risk factors, and promoting protective environments.

Each day of the week focuses on a different topic:

  • Monday: Preventing youth substance use

  • Tuesday: Mental health and wellness

  • Wednesday: Preventing suicide

  • Thursday: Preventing prescription drug misuse

  • Friday: Promoting resilience and protective factors
